The Perfect Spiritual Diet – Biggest Loser Part V

Each component of the support system is important.  Don’t leave any out; they are the keys to your success.  Forget to educate yourself, and you might be misguided…forget to celebrate, and you might lose heart.

P – Prayer

E – Education

R – Repetition

F – Focus

E – Exercise

C – Celebrate

T – Transformation

Step 1 – Prayer

1Th 5:16-18  Rejoice evermore.   Pray without ceasing.  In everything give thanks, for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you.

Weight loss programs often have meetings, consultations, etc. to help keep you focused on your goal, discuss trouble spots, and confess mistakes from the week.  God is your weight loss consultant and he is available 24/7.  He is there to confess your mistakes to, to call when you are facing temptation and are seeking strength, and to keep you focused on your goal.

Step 2 – Education

Joshua 1:8  This book of the Law shall not depart out of your mouth, but you shall meditate on it by day and by night, so that you may be careful to do according to all that is written in it. For then you shall make your way prosperous, and then you shall act wisely.

Physically, when we have the knowledge about what is truly healthy food, then we can make educated choices and feel comfortable with those decisions.  Spiritually, when we know God’s word, we have all the education we will ever need to succeed spiritually.

Step 3 – Repeat healthy behaviors

1 Corinthians 15:58  So that, my beloved brothers, be steadfast, immovable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, knowing that your labor is not without fruit in the Lord.

On average, the experts agree that it takes 21 days to establish a habit.  We’ve already discussed taking one step at a time…so don’t move on until you have that habit under your belt.  We learn to ride a bicycle by forcing ourselves to practice, even when it feels unnatural and uncomfortable. But repetition produces a habit that then feels natural and enjoyable.  So we change to serve God only when we compel ourselves to do what we know is right and repeat it until it becomes “second nature.”

Step 4 – Focus on the Healthy Things

Philippians 4:8  Finally, my brothers, whatever things are true, whatever things are honest, whatever things are right, whatever things are pure, whatever things are lovely, whatever things are of good report; if there is any virtue and if there is any praise, think on these things.

It is easy to make good choices when we have all the right elements around.  Physically speaking, when I have time to cook a healthy meal, then I will definitely take that time.  But what happens when I am rushed for time…I thought I would have enough time but this happened, then that…and it is on to the drive-thru go.

It is best to surround ourselves with things that will keep us focused on Christ.  But what happens when you find yourself in a situation that you couldn’t foresee; what would you do then?  Worthwhile activities, to be successful, need planning.  Likewise, to change your life, you need a plan. Analyze the circumstances or causes that lead you to fail, then plan how to avoid those causes.

Step 5 – Exercise

Luke 6:47-49  Whoever comes to Me and hears My Words, and does them, I will show you to whom he is like.  (48)  He is like a man who built a house and dug deep and laid the foundation on a rock; and a flood occurring, the stream burst against that house and could not shake it; for it was founded on a rock.  (49)  But he who hears and does not perform, is like a man who built a house on the earth without a foundation, on which the stream burst, and immediately it fell. And the ruin of that house was great.

The most important step in both our physical and spiritual diets is exercise.  We must put out more than we take in.  If I know my healthy foods, know my quicksand behaviors that will suck me out of my diet, and never get off the couch, I won’t lose any weight.  If I know God’s word, but never apply it to my life, then I will never lose any spiritual weight.

Step 6 – Celebrate

Psalm 40:2-3  He brought me up also out of a horrible pit, out of the miry clay, and set my feet on a rock, and gave sureness to my steps.  And He has put a new song in my mouth, praise to our God; many shall see it and fear, and shall trust in Jehovah.

Take time to pay attention to what your body and your spirit are saying to you.  When you are on a physical diet and you eat healthy food and exercise regularly, you will see and feel physical signs of your effort.  Same holds true for your spiritual diet.  Pay attention to how your spirits feels after consistent quiet times, unswerving service, and devoted bible study.  When you recognize how good you feel, celebrate…Praise God for what He is doing in your life!  Many will try to put you down and pull you away from your “diet,” celebrating is how you will combat their influence.

Step 7 – Transform

Ephesians 4:22-24  You were taught, with regard to your former way of life, to put off your old self, which is being corrupted by its deceitful desires; to be made new in the attitude of your minds; and to put on the new self, created to be like God in true righteousness and holiness.

Remember, you are not on a “diet” you are transforming your life.  We are not just talking about a transformation at the cellular level-we are going much deeper.  You will be eternally transformed.

  1. This is great! This would be a fantastic addition to any discipleship group as well as to a weight loss group! This is a great way to remember the steps to having a productive (fruit-bearing) life in Christ.
