Christian Nutrition Facts – The Biggest Loser Part IV

“Create in me a clean heart, O God.  Renew a loyal spirit within me.”  (Psalm 51:10, New Living Translation)

Before we can begin to eat healthy, we need sound nutrition information to base our diet on.  Spiritually we need to examine what nutrients we are going to take in. 

  • Carbohydrates = Worship

Worship provides us with our fuel.  It should ignite us, inspire us, and should be a way of life.  Everyday our knee should bow and our hands should raise in praise to our Heavenly Father.

  • Protein = God’s Word

God’s word is our protein and it is the building material of our spiritual walk.  It helps us build spiritual muscle.  When you have more fat than muscle, your body parts sag, jiggle and go with gravity (my granny arms are a prime example).  Muscle, on the other hand, holds its shape.  When we read God’s word, meditate on it, and store it in our hearts, we are building strong spiritual muscle that will hold its shape when the world tries to shake us up and pulls us down.

  • Fat (the healthy kind) = Prayer

Prayer pads our lives, insulates us and is our primary energy supply.  Our quiet time with God in prayer is essential if we are going to be healthy Christians.  It keeps us centered and focused, protects us when trouble comes our way, and comforts us when we feel discouraged. Prayer is nothing more than communication; and we should be communicating with God throughout the day. 

  • Fat (the unhealthy kind) = Sin

Sin is our saturated fat.  It clogs the arteries in our spiritual life.  Physically, when we take this kind of fat into our body it has to be worked off through exercise.  Spiritually, when we take sin into our hearts, we need to seek forgiveness for our sins in Christ.  Confession is the only way to “work off” this kind of fat, so repent the second sin even sticks it’s big toe through your door.  Keep your heart clean!

 The good thing with spiritual nutrients (except for saturated fat) is we can never consume too many.  However, if we don’t get the proper “nutrients” as Christians, or we consume without any exercise, we can still become unhealthy, overweight Christians clogging up the arteries in the Body of Christ.  So we need to be diligent about worshiping, praying and reading God’s Word.  And we need to approach these things with joy. When I am on a diet and I catch myself saying, “I should eat this salad.”  I know trouble is near, because I am looking at eating healthy food as a chore.  Spiritually, if we see our quiet time as a chore, we will miss the blessings God has for us. 

Furthermore, we need to strive to keep sin out of our lives, and we need to repent when sin darkens our door.  As I said in my “Ripples in the Sin Pool” post, keeping sin “hidden” in our lives causes trouble.  It has a ripple effect in our lives, and the lives of those around us.  If we are going to be spiritually healthy, this needs to be something we strive to keep out of our lives and our hearts.
